At least I had a break at half time, where I went down to the beach to get coffee. The Coffee Hatch advertises the best coffee in Lahinch. It was very nice and later, Marie told me the owner lived just over the hill from her.. I think everyone in Lahinch knows everyone and everyone's business as well!!!

But let's go back before the distress caused my Hawks terrible loss....
When I first booked my little apartment, the one stand out thing that was missing was a washing machine !! And not just my apartment, the whole town of Lahinch does not boast of a laundromat.
You can find some washing machines in Ennistymon - about 10 minutes away...
But... they are attached to a petrol station and they are out in the open... so you would have to sit there and wait for your washing on the grounds of the petrol station. Not really my idea of a good time!!
Anyway... back to the story..
When I booked this apartment, I pointed this out to Julia who was looking after the bookings and her solution was that I could bring my washing down to her office and for a small fee, she would see that the washing was done. Sounds like a plan!!
But.... alas and alack... I took my washing down this morning and she sadly admitted that they no longer had the washing machine access and there weren't many options to offer as alternatives... unless I wanted to sit in the grounds of the petrol station and wait for my washing!!!
So, what to do... Thank God for relatives!!! I texted cousin Marie and she immediately said Yes... come on down!!
So once the footy was over (*sob* *sob*) I took myself and my washing to her house and we immediately put it on and we were underway!
Her children were in Ennis having their music lessons, but soon they returned and I had brought a few gifts for them from Australia, so it was party time!!!I wonder if you can see a common theme in the presents???

Many thanks to my cousin in Melbourne, Liz Philpott and her daughter Julie who helped me choose and then collect the above items and deliver them to me whilst I was in Melbourne. The kids absolutely loved their gifts and I'm very grateful to Liz and Julie for their help in getting them... :)
Here are some more pics of the Shannon family. Marie and I share a common great, great grandfather. Our family emigrated from the farm that is still in the hands of the Curtins. Nora Curtin (Marie's Mum) and Sean (Marie's brother) still live on Curtin land in Tullygarvan - just outside Lahinch.

Also had a few discussions about our heritage but it's bit hard to find out about our heritage... I'm still working on that.

So, my washing dramas led to me a lovely day with my family over here. At one stage Marie said.. "You look really at home here" And it was so true... I really do feel at home here in County Clare. And I do feel very much at home with the Shannon family.
While we were waiting for the final drying of the washing, Ellen played us a few songs on her fiddle, and it was lovely. There is something very poignant about Irish music, and Ellen has this in abundance.
Here's a little video that captures that..
So It's amazing where a story about washing take you in one day!! :)
Moria. Am enjoying the blog enormously. Feel like I am getting to know a part of Ireland I have never travelled to. It is also providing a lot of info on the intricacies of Irish travel. Thank you for sharing. I read your blog before any newspapers! M
ReplyDeleteGood on you M. So glad you are enjoying. It gives me pleasure to do it too!!! Yes the Irish way of life is a little different to its but there are many similarities too. π

ReplyDeleteππ The washing machine saga was hilarious! Especially as you thought you had it all sorted before you left.
The kids looked thrilled with their giftsππΌ.
Loved the video of Ellen playing the fiddle- music runs in the family π€

Sometimes things aren't funny at the time but in retrospect you can have a laugh. My day turned out much better than I thought. Glad you liked the music. Patrick is a great little musician too.
DeleteI loved the blog, you do make me smile especially about the washing dramaπ€£
ReplyDeleteWhat a talented young lady play the fiddle. X
I always seem to manage a drama about washing! I think I should've labelled my 2018 blog... Wattles ongoing washing dramas!!π€£π€£
DeleteWell that turned out to be a great day. Cheers Colleen
ReplyDeleteHey Col you made it at last! Well done. Yes it turned out to be a super day... double whammy of good things. π
DeleteYes whatever you did at your end must have fixed it because I didn’t do anything at my end.
DeleteGlad it's sorted anyway!
DeleteGreat blog Moira. What a wonderful talented family. It will be hard to leave when the time comes. I feel your footy pain too, I've had more downs than up following the Saints over the years.
ReplyDeleteAnne
Hi Anne. I still remember the pain from my growing up years when we celebrated any hawks win. Have to admit we've been a bit spoilt since! Those kids certainly are talented but I think most Irish kids have music oozing out of their veins!! πΆπ΅
DeleteMrsT here. I found out that when I use my tablet to comment I am anonymous but am logged in when I use my laptop so now you know my posting medium!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it so wonderful when something that appears such a disaster/pain ends up to be the best thing anyway!
Love the music Moira, you have some very talented relatives xx
Exactly the same for me Denise. When I go to comment on my phone or laptop I come out as wattle, but my ipad still makes me anonymous. I feel a challenge coming in here... ππ
DeleteHi Moira, great reading. Interested in you meeting with Moira , Pat and Kids. I'm guessing that they live at Lahinch. When Mum (Patricia) and dad visited some years ago they met up with some Curtin relatives firstly in Lahinch (I think) and then in Kilrush for a larger family get together, where they seemed to live?? They had a couple of children, one of whom was quite ill at the time. I will have to dig through my family tree stuff to try to recover who they were. I wonder what the connection is with Kilrush (there is a district called MacCurtain just north of Kilrush)
ReplyDeleteSorry the last post was from me.. Phill O'C Patricia's son.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear from you Phil. Yes, I remember there was a sister to Patrick, Eileen, and she lived in Kilrush. She had a daughter Patsy who was quite ill . I met them on my very first visit here in the late 90s. Will try and get some more info about the family. Nothing like talking with a genuine source!!
