Day 10 Kilkee Cliffs
|
Kilkee Cliffs |
Today started out as usual, except it was pelting down rain when the bells summoned me to Church. Lucky I only had a few steps to go! The weather had calmed down a bit by the time I came out, but it was still pretty rugged.
The Atlantic was quite wild....
But I managed to go for a walk and today I had my coffee at Val's - very nice too!

The other nice thing about this morning was I got to talk to my brother Jim in Melbourne. We still have a few loose ends to tidy up after Terry's death, so it was lovely to be among family again - thank God for Whatsapp!!
Then the big decision - where to go today???
The weather had started to calm down a bit. so I thought I might go to Kilkee Cliffs - which many of the locals think are better than the Cliffs of Moher - and certainly less crowded!!!

So I headed south and away I went.
My first stop on the way was a bit tongue in cheek, but I stopped at Donald Trump's Hotel and Golf Course in Doonbeg. I guess I just wanted to see what it was like. The locals feel quite ambivalent about Trump.... most of them don't like what he stands for, but he does employ a lot of people at his resort, so they are grateful for that.
Here's a few pics - it's an impressive building...

So after all that excitement it was time for lunch. Kilkee was a lovely little town and the first pub I went into didn't do food at all, but the lady behind the bar recommended Stella Maris Hotel.... now there's a sign!

After that it was only a short drive to the Cliffs and how magnificent they were. By now the sun had come out in all its glory and the colour of the sea was just resplendent, with the blue of the water and the white waves crashing against the rocks. And big bonus - there absolutely no tourists anywhere!!!!
Here's some pics - but they don't do it justice!!

Hope that's not overkill!!! I've still left half of them out!
I couldn't really capture their magnificence - and I was very careful not to go too near the edge as the wind was blowing quite strongly!
Just 2 more ...

So then it was just a quiet ramble to get home in time to sort out my photos, write my blog and head down the pub for my half pint of Smithwicks!!!
That's all done now... had a lovely half pint... then had some grilled sea bass for dinner at the Atlantic Hotel.
The Atlantic has become wild again.. it's like a a complete circle for the day!
So that's Day 10 - done and dusted! :)
Impressive, reminds of driving along the Great Ocean Road.
ReplyDeleteA few people have said that!! Haven't done the Great Ocean Rd for a very long time. But I'll take your word for it!! 😁
DeleteIs there something about Moira and cliffs that I need to know about??? Just askin'!!!!.....
ReplyDeleteNeed to know who you are before I tell you!!!🤣🤣🤣
DeleteWhat beautiful pics. More of the same tomorrow please. No pressure 😃
ReplyDeleteMeggsie x
Try my best Meggsie. Love your enthusiasm !! 😁
DeleteThose photos are just beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing these Moria. It is opening up a new part of Ireland that I will now travel to next Ireland trip. Thanks. M
ReplyDeleteHey M. Love to know which M you are!! Have a few on the list 😁 Glad you are finding new parts of Ireland 🇮🇪. It's amazing how many little places lie tucked away. Enjoy!
DeleteJust wonderful Moira, brought back so many memories of Kilkee for me. We were heading nth and caught the car ferry across the Shannon. To our surprise most other vehicles had horse floats attached. We soon learnt they were off to the races at Kilkee so being curious we followed. Arrived to chaos, the races were held on the beach, the town came out to watch, it was hilarious, i will tell you in more detail when i see you next.
ReplyDeleteBye until your next blog, Anne
Hey Anne. Yes I have some pics of Kilkee beach.. will forward them to you. I didn't want to overload the blog. That would have been a great site to see the horse races on the beach. They are the stories that make travel so exciting!!
DeleteAnother day of fantastic photos and interesting trips - thank you for starting my day with these. The cliffs and coast are amazing- a slight reminder of parts of the Great Ocean Road? I think the sea is at it's best when it is like the Atlantic this owning. MrsT xx
ReplyDeleteYes I love the sea when it's roaring! I could hear it from my bed last night.. Those Cliffs were magical and the sunny day just set them off... how lucky am I??
DeleteEnjoying every bit of your journey Moira. Love your stories, pics and thanks for including me on your adventures.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are enjoying. Nice to know there are people following along with me.
DeleteWhat consistently beautiful countryside. Love video and photos of all the sea scapes in particular. I want to make some clever quip about Donald Trump’s presence in Ireland .. to be honest, words fail me. Xox
ReplyDeleteThe Irish countryside and the seascapes are just magnificent! Interesting to hear from Marie's US cousins about their views on Donald Trump. Let's just say we agree to disagree!!!!😁
ReplyDeleteHo Moira, I was scrolling through your blog and saw Kilkee and remember that town fondly - in fact I think we stayed in that hotel - and enjoyed it mightily! We were going to surprise some young Australian friends by just turning up and it was a good plan as there was lots of hugs and laughing!!! X marian m
ReplyDeleteHi Marian. Yes it's a lovely pub. Wouldn't mind staying there myself. The dining room is lovely and the pub part looks like it had real character.
